So we’re about 30 miles into our ride today (Poole Rd. park to Lake Johnson and back on the Walnut Creek Trail) when I made a shift from the little ring to the big ring. The chain went too far, and I didn’t notice and apparently rotated the crank another time after the chain was off.
There was no getting it undone. I tried and tried, no bueno. Thankfully, I was able to pop the quick-link, completely remove the chain, and put it back on correctly. It scratched the mess out of my crank arm, but everything seemed kosher on the next few miles back to the car.
At the very least, have a quick link in your seat bag even if you don’t have one in your chain. I have an extra with me always just in case I break a chain. It’s saved me from walking once or twice in the past.
