When I purchased the Fuji Sportif from Performance Bike it came with an Oval brand saddle that is just awful. It’s long, and it’s narrow. I basically felt like it was trying to split me in half. It put pressure on soft tissue which resulted in numbness in places I’d rather not have numbness…
I think I mentioned before that because of this, I ran out and purchased a Selle Italia Gel Flow Man, and it feels pretty great compared to the Oval saddle, however after about a hundred miles, the numbness is back.
After consulting r/Bicycling on Reddit, I was advised to try moving the saddle forward, the idea being that moving it forward will put my weight on the back of the saddle, and take pressure off of the soft tissue in the front.
I marked the current location of the saddle with a piece of tape, and then slid it forward 1/4″. Last night we went out for a quick after work ride, and things were much improved in the comfort department, but after 30 minutes or so, I went numb again.
Interestingly, this saddle move also seemed to help with my hand numbness. I gave up cycling 7 years ago because my hand numbness had gotten so bad, so this is very welcome. The plan is to mark the current location, and then slide the saddle forward another 1/4″ before my next ride. I hadn’t even realized that the new saddle was installed so fat back. I measured from the stem bolt to the rear of the old saddle, and mimicked that measurement on the new saddle, which basically put it all the way to the rear.
I’m interested to see how this turns out. I’ve been getting a little discouraged about getting back into cycling since I’m having the numbness issues. I want to ride a lot, but it’s no fun when your hands, feet, and seat are numb.
